At least five people were killed and 15 others injured when a three-storey building collapsed due to a powerful gas cylinder explosion in Jhelum on Sunday.

As per initial reports, a three-storey hotel located on Grand Trunk Road in Punjab’s Jhelum collapsed after a cylinder blast in the kitchen.

Rescue officials said at least 15 injured have been recovered and shifted to Jhelum District Headquarters (DHQ) hospital. The condition of two of the injured is serious and they have been taken to Rawalpindi, he said.

District Emergency Officer (DEO) Saeed Ahmen said the first and second floors of the building have been sanitised, adding that some people were still trapped in the basement of the hotel.

Search and rescue operations are on to rescue all those trapped under the debris of the building, he said.
