Peak hours are those hours of the day during which the demand for electricity is highest. During this period, people are charged the highest amount per kilowatt-hour of usage.

As of publication, the peak hours have now been increased by two hours, ie from 5 pm to 11 pm instead of 6 pm to 10 pm.

The power division has decided that consumers using time-of-use meters will have to pay Rs 49.35 per unit during peak hours from 5 pm to 11 am, and after peak hours, they will pay 11 pm to 5 pm. Will pay Rs 33.3 per unit till Rs.

Those with three-phase meters will now have to pay Rs 50 per unit during peak hours, as against Rs 30 per unit earlier.

To cover line losses and control the circular debt of the power sector, the government aims to collect more than 3 trillion rupees from the public – and increasing peak hours is one way to raise revenue.

The government has also directed the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) to draft a plan for increasing gas rates. Meanwhile, Ogra plans to increase gas rates by up to 50%.

The government has taken several measures to meet the IMF’s demands – including hikes in electricity duty, petroleum rates and income tax. However, this has further burdened the public as inflation continues to remain at a high level.
