The Chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi (BIEK), Professor Dr Sayeeduddin, has been removed from his post before the completion of his tenure. The Sindh government’s move came at a time when intermediate examinations were underway in the provincial capital.
Dr. Sayeeduddin was removed from his role during the ongoing examinations and Dr. Naseem Memon, Chairman of Larkana Education Board, has been given the responsibility of BIEK Chairman for the next two years.
Significantly, a few days back, Dr. Sayeeduddin was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management Sciences. However, he did not take up the offered position as Class 11 examinations were being held in Karachi at this time and Class 12 results were being prepared.
According to sources, Secretary, University and Board Department, Government of Sindh, Murid Rahemoon appointed Larkana Board chairman as interim chairman of Karachi Intermediate Board for two years. The decision was taken after consulting and getting approval from the Education Minister of Sindh, Ismail Rahu.
Critics have raised concerns over changing the chairperson during ongoing exams, fearing that it could have a negative impact on the exams and results.
Meanwhile, the chairmanships of the Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpur Khas and Sindh technical boards have completed their terms, but fresh appointments are yet to be made to fill the vacancies. Additionally, the Chairman of Sindh Technical Board Karachi and Hyderabad Board are working without proper notification, which is a matter of concern. Dr. Farooq, Chairman of the Benazirabad Board, has been in charge of Sakrand University for many years.
Sources suggested that the chairman of the Karachi Intermediate Board was removed due to political pressure. Thousands of employees of the Karachi Intermediate Board do duty during elections. Sources said that giving the charge to the chairman of the Larkana Board ahead of the elections could be seen as an attempt to influence the process.
It has also been said that political personalities prevented Dr. Sayeeduddin from becoming the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad. Nevertheless, he managed to secure the post of Vice-Chancellor at the Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management Sciences for a four-year term after going through a search committee process and being approved in an interview by President Arif Alvi.
