Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser has been arrested from his residence in Islamabad’s Bani Gala area, the former National Assembly speaker’s brother said on Friday.
Sources said Qaiser was detained by police and Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) personnel for alleged corrupt practices related to the procurement of medical equipment for the Gajju Khan Medical College in Swabi.
He said that after his arrest he was shifted to an unknown place.
Qaiser’s arrest is another blow to the Imran Khan-led party, which is already embroiled in a legal battle as its top leadership is behind bars in various cases.
It is noteworthy that Qaiser had led the PTI delegation in a meeting with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence last month.
“Today, we have come to express our condolences [over the demise of Fazl’s mother-in-law], this is our culture. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Qaiser said, “We did not discuss politics in the meeting”, adding that the meeting was held after Khan’s approval.
Meanwhile, PTI chief and vice-chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi is also lodged in Adiala jail and facing trial in the cipher case.
Imran was initially arrested on May 9 in a corruption case, leading to massive protests by the party across the country, with state establishments being targeted.
During the riots, important military installations including the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and the residence of the Lahore Corp Commander were vandalized.
Due to this, action was taken against those involved in the incidents and hundreds of party workers and leaders were arrested.
