A massive explosion at a chemical plant along Farm to Market 1127 in Shepherd, San Jacinto County, Texas has injured several people, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Following the explosion, emergency workers rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

According to officials, everyone within a radius of eight kilometers (five miles) has been asked to stay put.

All the surrounding places including the nearby school have been evacuated. There are no confirmed reports of casualties. The reason for the explosion still remains a mystery.

Over the next several hours, there will likely be a large number of emergency personnel in the area. There is a possibility of transportation and economic disruption in the area. Roads may be closed further and people may be evacuated.

There are reports of several casualties. More explosions occurred as first responders (fire, EMS, and law enforcement) arrived from all directions.

A portion of Highway 59 is blocked in both directions, from FM 1988 to Exit 451B. TxDOT is requesting that you avoid this area and use an alternate route.

According to the San Jacinto County Office of Emergency Management, the Sheppard ISD administration building is a safe haven for all children and staff at a nearby private school.
