With the upcoming general elections coming closer, senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah on Thursday said that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari is on the path to becoming the “Prime Minister of Lahore”. Speaking to journalists in Lahore, Sanaullah said that the people will decide the next Prime Minister and it is hoped that his decision will be acceptable to everyone.

His comments came as a heated war of words broke out between the PPP and the PML-N, the two former allies of the previous Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led coalition government, ever since the Election Commission of Pakistan rejected the decision to hold elections in the country on February 8. The romance between the two former allies ended after the PDM-led coalition government completed its term in August and both the PPP and PML-N were at loggerheads over election-related issues.

In September, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari blamed the PML-N for not getting a level playing field. Without taking names, he took a dig at the PML-N, saying it was “really strange” that a certain party knew the election date.

On 6 November, Zardari expressed hope that his son Bilawal would emerge victorious as the sun rises on 8 February next year, when general elections will be held in the country.

Taking a dig at PML-N supremo Nawaz, who returned to the country on October 21 after ending four-year self-exile in London, Zardari on Tuesday said he was not leaving the country as he was tied to his workers.

Zardari further said, “What will I say to my worker when I look him in the eyes?” He said that his party does its own politics irrespective of the politics of others.

On the other hand, to give a tough challenge to PPP in Sindh, PML-N and MQM-P decided to contest the upcoming general elections together.

‘Ready for talks with PTI leadership on May 9’

Speaking to the media, the PML-N leader said that there is no legal hurdle for Nawaz to contest the upcoming general or by-elections.

Responding to a question, the former security chief said the PML-N supremo would soon hold meetings with the leadership of various political parties, including PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. He said that Shahbaz Sharif will remain the president of the party.

“We are ready to hold talks with PTI leadership on May 9 [the country’s] Economic recovery,” he said.

In a rare move, PTI has also announced the formation of a “political engagement committee” to reach out to rival parties ahead of the upcoming elections.

The five-member committee includes Senator Ali Zafar, Senator Dr Humayun Mohmand, Ali Muhammad Khan, Ali Asghar Khan and Rauf Hasan, the party’s notification was shared on its official .
